Yoshi is a green dinosaur-like character from the Mario franchise in which he is one of Mario and Luigi's main allies. Yoshi also went on to become the star of his own franchise. Yoshi is the main representative of his species of the same name. Any Green Yoshi can be identified as the "Yoshi" character, so not all iterations of the character are necessarily the same one. Yoshi has several defining traits, including his cheerful and friendly personality, his ability to flutter-jump and lay an egg, and exclaiming his own name.
Yoshi makes his first overall appearance in Super Mario World, a game within the Super Mario series. Yoshi often acts as a rideable character for Mario, Luigi, and other characters, but in spin-off games and crossover appearances, such as the Mario & Sonic series, Yoshi is a playable character on his own.
History[edit]
Mario & Sonic series[edit]
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)[edit]

Yoshi is a playable character in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, in which he is part of the Speed type category. In the opening movie, Yoshi is first shown with all of the other athletes at both the start and end, and is later shown competing in Singles and 110m Hurdles.
Like the other playable characters, Yoshi has six of his own missions, and the last one is unlocked by clearing the first five:
- Hammer Throw: Yoshi has to build up as much power as he can, then throw the hammer right in the center when "!" appears onscreen.
- High Jump: Yoshi has to jump from the blue zone two times and clear the bar.
- Individual epée: Yoshi has to parry his opponent's attacks six times and win.
- Singles: Yoshi has to rally shots with his opponent 15 times. If either Yoshi or his opponent misses, the player loses at the mission.
- 100m Freestyle: Yoshi has to finish between 48 and 50 seconds
- 4x100m Relay: This mission is unlocked by clearing the previous five. The goal is for Yoshi to pass the baton at the exact moment three times, displaying the text "Great!" onscreen, and finish in first place.
By clearing all of these missions, the player earns the Yoshi Emblem. They can also unlock the Yoshi Crown by having Yoshi clear every event in first place.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]
Yoshi is also a Speed-type playable character in the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Yoshi still has six of his own missions, the last of which is unlocked by clearing the first five missions, although the missions are different than in the Wii version:
- 10m Platform: Yoshi has to enter the water at an angle between 170 to 180 degrees.
- Singles: Yoshi has to not only win but prevent his opponent to score three points.
- Trampoline: The player must enter 32 or more performance commands.
- Dream Basketball: Yoshi has to make five consecutive shots.
- Dream Canoe: Yoshi must gather 20 coins within 60 seconds.
- 400m Hurdles: This mission is unlocked by clearing the previous five missions. Here, Yoshi has to win against Tails.
Like in the Wii version, clearing all of Yoshi's missions unlocks the Yoshi Emblem, and having Yoshi win first place in every event unlocks the Yoshi Crown.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[edit]

Yoshi returns as a Speed type playable character in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. In the opening movie, Yoshi is first seen alongside the other athletes at the start, and he is also seen competing in Skeleton and Curling. Yoshi's Special Skill is his Flutter Jump, which he can use
A Mii outfit based on Yoshi can be unlocked after Yoshi wins five gold and/or 1st place medals in any event and then buying the costume in the boutique.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]
In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Yoshi is once again a playable character of the Speed type. Yoshi was given another Special Skill, Thrash Dash, but retains his Flutter Jump from the Wii version.
In Adventure Tours mode, Yoshi is one of the unlockable characters who can take part in the events. Yoshi is first encountered in Polastraits, where the player's character must win against Yoshi in a Luge event to have him join their party. Later, in Sparkleton, Yoshi stars in the minigame Light Five Lamps!, in which the goal is for Yoshi to light five lamps using his tongue within the time limit. Clearing the minigame opens a gate. In Cubyrinth, Yoshi tells the others that it is easy to get lost. He puts his Drift Board down and goes for a walk, only to get lost and lose his Drift Board soon after. Although Birdo found Yoshi's Drift Board, she claims it is hers in spite of Yoshi's consent. In the following Ski Cross Racing event, Yoshi, who is controlled by the player, must win against Birdo to reclaim his Drift Board, on the condition of Birdo stating that the Drift Board belongs to the top athlete.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[edit]

Yoshi is a playable character in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, returning as part of the Speed type. He also retains his Special Skill, the Flutter Jump.
In the opening movie, Yoshi is first shown at the start alongside the other athletes. He is later seen in Football and Dream Uneven Bars.
In London Party, Yoshi can be talked to in order to play Bonus Games and earn stickers. A Mii costume based on him can be unlocked either from winning it through a Scratch Card or by paying ten blank cards.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[edit]
In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, just as in previous Mario & Sonic titles, Yoshi is a playable character of the Speed type, and he has Flutter Jump as his Special Skill. Yoshi has been added to the Challengers group, meaning he can only compete in certain events.
In the Story Mode, Yoshi first appears helping Sonic and Tails defeat some imposters and investigating the Phantasmal Fog in the area in an effort to allow Tower Bridge to be lowered. After gaining help from Shadow, Silver and Jet, the group manage to defeat Bowser Jr. and destroy the fog machine, clearing the fog from the area and letting the bridge be lowered. When Bowser Jr. tries to escape, Yoshi follows after him. Yoshi also appears supporting Mario, Luigi, Sonic, and Tails when they Bowser and Dr. Eggman, later appearing at the opening ceremony as well. Yoshi also appears in the bonus episode Junior Hits England, where he meets Bowser Jr. while training at Stonehenge and challenges him to an event, eventually being defeated but congratulating Bowser Jr.'s performance.
A badge of Yoshi can also be obtained from the badge machine.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Yoshi returns as a Speed type playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, alongside the Mii costume based on him. Yoshi retains Flutter Jump as his Special Skill.
In Legends Showdown, Yoshi is on the first team, along with Sonic, Tails and Donkey Kong. There is a Mii costume based on Yoshi that can be unlocked by getting over 90% perfect score in Mario's Figure Skating Spectacular.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[edit]
In the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Yoshi is only playable in 100m and Football. This is the only Mario & Sonic game in which Yoshi is not a Speed type, let alone any type.
In the Road to Rio mode, Yoshi is a small supporting playable character. If the player's Mii is a member of Sonic's Gym, he challenges against Yoshi on day 1.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)[edit]
In the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Yoshi is a playable character available from the start, and can be played in any event. He is once again of the Speed type, like in other Mario & Sonic titles. Yoshi's stats consist of his Power at 6, Speed at 8, and Technique at 4.
There is a Mii costume set based on Yoshi, and it can be unlocked by clearing Yoshi's Carnival Challenge. The outfit is in two separate parts, each with their own stat changes.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition[edit]
In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition, Yoshi is a playable character of the Speed type in every event, although both 110m Hurdles and Trampoline are listed as his recommended events. Yoshi's stats are slightly different than in the Wii U version, with his Power being decreased to 5, his Speed increased to 9, and his Technique still at 4.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]

Yoshi is once again a Speed type playable character in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. He is only playable in the Tokyo 2020 events.
In Story Mode, Yoshi came to the Shibuya Scramble Crossing with some friends, only to lose them in the crowd. He eventually met Tails and Luigi, whom he asked for help to find his friends. When the duo hesitated, Yoshi convinced them to help him by offering them passes to other venues in exchange for their aid. After Luigi found Yoshi's friends, in the Shibuya Scramble Search minigame, Yoshi gave them the passes as promised. When he asked why Tails and Luigi wanted the passes though, Yoshi learned that they were gathering gold medals to get Sonic, Mario and Toad out a gaming system that they were trapped in with Dr. Eggman and Bowser. Yoshi thus decided to join Tails and Luigi's party to help them. When the group later needed to charge the Excitement Battery using the cheers of the audience, Yoshi and Peach teamed up to have a Doubles match with Knuckles and Shadow. Defeating Knuckles and Shadow, Yoshi and Peach's performance created enough cheers to charge the Excitement Battery a little. After later getting everyone out of the gaming system, Yoshi joined the other competitors in a 100m event. After the heroes won the event, Yoshi got excited as the Olympic Games were ready to commence.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition[edit]
In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition, Yoshi is a playable character of the Speed type. He has the same statistics as in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition.

Yoshi is a playable fighter in every Super Smash Bros. game. His symbol is a Yoshi Egg, representing the Yoshi franchise instead of the Mario franchise. Yoshi's stage entrance involves him breaking out of a Yoshi Egg.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Yoshi is one the playable fighters. His appearance has been modified from the previous two Super Smash Bros. to be more consistent with his modern appearance.
Yoshi has an average ground speed and a high second jump granted by a Flutter Jump. Yoshi has a tether grab in which he uses his tongue, and Yoshi is unique in that he uses a Yoshi Egg rather than the normal shield. Yoshi's down aerial is the Flutter Kick. Because of his forward tilt, which differs from previous two games, many of Yoshi's attacks involve the use of his tail.
Most of Yoshi's special moves revolve around the use of eggs, mostly based on his abilities in the Yoshi platforming series. Yoshi's standard special move is Egg Lay, in which Yoshi grabs an opponent with his tongue, swallows them, and turns them into an egg to trap them. His up special move is Egg Throw, in which Yoshi tosses an egg to deal damage. His down special move is Yoshi Bomb, in which Yoshi leaps up and does a Ground Pound. Yoshi has a side special move, Egg Roll, in which he encases himself inside an egg and rolls across the ground. Yoshi's Final Smash is Super Dragon, during which Yoshi has a massive pair of wings and can fly around while spitting out large fireballs.
Yoshi has five alternate costumes, each being a differently colored Yoshi: Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, and Light-Blue.
Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary[edit]

In Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, Yoshi is first shown sleeping on a tree stump in a forest. Link walks by Yoshi without seeing him. Soon, the Halberd attacks the peaceful area, deploying Primids against Link and Yoshi. Yoshi wakes up and walks up to Link, and the two advance through the forest together. After making it through the dangers of the wood, they watch from a cliff as the Halberd flies away, high in the sky, but continue their pursuit of it, undaunted.
If Peach is rescued from Petey Piranha: After reaching a grassland, Link and Yoshi see False Peach about to shoot a Dark Cannon at Mario and Pit, but before she can, Link cuts the cannon in half, and he and Yoshi start to fight. After they win, Mario stops to see Yoshi and Link standing over a dissolving trophy. Mario gets mad at Link, thinking that he is a member of the Subspace Army and that he defeated Peach. He runs to Link and Yoshi very fast and tries to hit Link. Mario and Pit then attack Link and Yoshi.
If Zelda is rescued from Petey Piranha: Link stops to see Mario and Pit standing over a dissolving trophy of False Zelda. Link gets mad at Mario, thinking that he is a member of the Subspace Army and that he defeated Zelda. He quickly runs towards Mario and tries to hit him. Yoshi then joins Link in fighting Mario and Pit.
Soon, after the battle, the four understand each other and the four become a team. They see King Dedede, who had taken Luigi, Ness, and the other princess. He attempts to take Mario and Pit/Link and Yoshi as well, until Kirby comes and rescues them. Either Link or Pit blows out the engine of the Cargo depending on which fake princess was initially fought (if Peach, it is Pit; if Zelda, it is Link). Along with Kirby, they follow Dedede to his castle, only to find that Bowser had taken the princess and got away.
Eventually, they reach a desert where the Ancient Minister is carrying a Subspace Bomb. Pit fires an arrow at the Ancient Minister, trying to stop him from placing the bomb. However, the Ancient Minister places the bomb and his R.O.B.s install it. Although Mario and Pit try to stop them, the bomb is about to blow up. The Ancient Minister leaves the area, and the bomb explodes. Mario hops on Yoshi, while everyone else hops on Kirby's Warp Star, and they all leave the area before the explosion of the Subspace Bomb reaches them.
After a battle at the Canyon, Yoshi and his teammates meet up with the other heroes and enter Subspace, only to have Tabuu turn everyone into trophies. Yoshi was rescued by Kirby, who had been revived by one of Dedede's brooches that he had eaten. Everyone, including Yoshi, then joins forces and eventually defeats Tabuu.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Yoshi returns again as a playable fighter. His appearance has been changed again, with his model being reproportioned and his stance made more upright, making him further consistent with his design in both the Mario and Yoshi games. Yoshi's special moves are unchanged, although some of his other moves were changed to match his new appearance. Yoshi can jump out of his shield like in the original Super Smash Bros.. Yoshi also received an increase in mobility, but with his overall damage output being lowered. For equipment, Yoshi is the only character who can use the Egg and Saddle equipment for offense and defense, respectively, and Yoshi can use Boots for speed.
Yoshi received two additional alternate costumes, each being another color variation: purple and black.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Yoshi returns as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Yoshi Eggs in Egg Throw can now bounce off the ground. Yoshi's idle animation was made similar to his idle animation from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, while his running animation has him in an upright stance. Most of Yoshi's costumes from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U make a reappearance reappear in this game, except for Black Yoshi, who is replaced with a different alternate costume based on Yoshi's appearance in Yoshi's Crafted World. For his Final Smash, Yoshi instead uses Stampede!, in which he summons numerous Yoshis of varying colors to trample the opponents, something that was derived from Super Smash Bros. Melee's opening movie.
Yoshi's overall mobility has been further improved, sporting faster walking, dashing, and air speeds, as well as a higher initial dash. Yoshi benefits from other universal changes, such as reduced short hop timing, lowered landing lag in his aerials, the reintroduction of directional air dodging, the ability to use any ground attack out of a run, and the ability to use his aerial attacks on ladders. Yoshi's pummel is much faster, but it is also weaker; however, his overall damage output is slightly improved, while many of his attacks deal more knockback.
Like several other returning fighters, Yoshi's victory theme has been slightly shortened and sped up compared to in the previous installments.
Classic Mode route[edit]
By completing Yoshi's Classic Mode route, it is possible to unlock Lucario, Marth, Ryu, Ganondorf, Lucina, Ridley, Chrom, or Ken.
Yoshi's Classic Mode route has him fight reptilian opponents.

Flag description[edit]
Yoshi
The voracious friend of the Mario brothers hails from Yoshi’s Island. He uses his long tongue to eat just about everything, but is especially fond of melons and other fruits. He’s attending these Olympic Games with a host of colorful friends at his side.
Miis' dialogues[edit]
- Yoshi and Mario are always palling around together on adventures. It's nice to see true friends like that. He even lets Mario ride on his back! Man, I'd give anything to ride a Yoshi. Anything! ...Well, OK. Not ANYTHING. But you get what I mean.
- Yoshi is such a glutton! That long tongue can pick up pretty much anything, though I hear his favorite food is melon.
- There are lots of varieties and colors of Yoshis, but they're all still just called "Yoshi." It's not really a name like how "Mario" is. If you're even in doubt, you can tell a Yoshi by their kind heart, fast feet, and huge appetite!

- Website description: "Mario's kind, chill ally from Yoshi's Island. His long tongue lets him gobble up fruit and foe alike and turn them into eggs."
