Power Sneakers are a speed power-up featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise that resembles Sonic the Hedgehog's shoes. They first appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog game for the Sega Genesis, in which they grant Sonic a temporary speed boost.

History[edit]

Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)[edit]

In the 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog, when obtaining the Power Sneakers, the background music changes to a more fast-paced variation of the level theme. The effect lasts for about twenty seconds.

In the original version, the Power Sneaker icon on the Video Monitors lack the white strap and gold buckle. In the remaster, this was partially fixed with the addition of a white strap to the Item Box's picture.

Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Wii, Power Sneakers only appear in Dream Race, where they are referred to as High Speed. In this game and subsequent Mario & Sonic titles, they have the same function as in the main Sonic the Hedgehog series, granting the user a temporary speed boost.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the Nintendo DS, they were renamed to Speed Boost and included as an item in Dream Long Jump.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the Wii, they are named High Speed Shoes, and they are featured as an item in nearly every Dream Event except Dream Figure Skating.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the Nintendo DS, High Speed Shoes only appear in Fever Hockey and Rocket Ski Jumping.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games for the Wii, Power Sneakers are an item which can be obtained from ? Balloons around London in London Party mode. Some of the minigames within the mode feature Power Sneakers as an item.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the Nintendo 3DS, Power Sneakers appear in Boxing Plus, and as an effect in Football Plus, where they affect the whole team, and are known as Speed Up items.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the Wii U, Power Sneakers are an item in Duel Beach Volleyball.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Power Sneakers appear as an item in Dream Racing, referred to as High Speed. The item grants its user a short boost in speed in a similar fashion to Dash Mushrooms from the Mario Kart series.
