Hammer Bros. are a species of Koopas from the Mario franchise which stand upright and throw hammers at their targets. Hammer Bros. make their first overall appearance in Super Mario Bros., and appear in only one Sega game, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Hammer Bros. also appear throughout the Super Smash Bros. series, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl being their first shared crossover appearance with a Sega-owned franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog in particular.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Hammer Bros. are featured as both an Assist Trophy and as one of the Mario enemies part of the Subspace Army in Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, being the only character or species to have that distinction. In both cases, a Hammer Bro attacks by throwing hammers at its target, occasionally jumping while doing so, like in the Mario franchise. The hammers thrown by the Assist Trophy counterpart only damage the opponents of whichever fighter released it. Unlike the Hammer Bros. in The Subspace Emissary, the Assist Trophy counterpart cannot take any damage.

The game also features both a trophy and a sticker of a Hammer Bro, the latter depicting its New Super Mario Bros. artwork.

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[edit]

A Hammer Bro in Smash Run in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Hammer Bros. return as an Assist Trophy. Opponents can now attack a Hammer Bro, like in the previous game's Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, and doing this enough times defeats the Hammer Bro, causing it to flip upside-down and fall off-screen, just like how they are defeated in Super Mario Bros.. The same trophy of Hammer Bro also appears in both games.

In the Smash Run mode of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Hammer Bros. return as an enemy. They retain a similar behavior, but like several other enemies, when a Hammer Bro is defeated, it bounces around several times before disappearing.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hammer Bro returns as an Assist Trophy again. It is also featured as an Advanced-class Grab-type primary spirit, which depicts its New Super Mario Bros. U artwork, and grants the user slightly increased jump height. In the corresponding spirit battle, the player has to fight Yoshi on the Golden Plains stage, and the Hammer Bro Assist Trophy appears when the opponent is highly damaged.

The core extracted from a Hammer Bro spirit can be used with a Reporter & Wrestler core to summon Masked Dedede's spirit.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[edit]

A Hammer Bro entering Stage 4 of Museum Sneak in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, Hammer Bros. only appear in two 2D Events, Volleyball and Marathon, and the Tokyo 1964 minigame Museum Sneak. Like several other Mario characters and species in the Tokyo '64 game system, Hammer Bros. reuse their sprites from Super Mario Bros..

Unlike their other appearances, Hammer Bros. neither use hammers nor have any association with them. In Museum Sneak, some time after Mario starts a stage, a Hammer Bro with a flashlight enters the area. It moves around faster than the other enemies. In Volleyball, five Hammer Bros. serve as Bowser's teammates. In Marathon, several Hammer Bros. are among the 68 participants, and they move at a similar fast speed as the Hammer Bro in Museum Sneak.

Physical appearance[edit]

Hammer Bros. have yellow skin, slightly protruded noses with snake-shaped nostrils, cream-colored belly plates, and white eyes with blue irises, while wearing green shells and green shoes (sometimes they're barefoot), as well as green-and-white helmets (though the colors change depending on the variant); Hammer Bros. are also armed with black (sometimes gray) hammers. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Hammer Bros. have a more realistic appearance than in the Mario franchise, having a monotone appearance and detailed hammers and helmets, although their New Super Mario Bros. artwork appears to be the basis for their design. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Hammer Bros. have a vibrant, cartoonish appearance with less detailed hammers and helmets. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Hammer Bro's helmet and shoes were made a lighter green color.

A character who throws a seemingly endless stream of hammers. Hammer Bros. have also been known to jump every so often. Since they throw their hammers in a high arc, if you manage to get in close, the hammers can't hit you. Unlike Koopas and Buzzy Beetles, Hammer Bros. don't reduce to their shells when jumped on. As the name suggests, most Hammer Bros. are found in pairs.

In this game, they appear solo, flinging hammers at the nearest target. They can also jump and throw, so stay sharp!

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U tips[edit]

  • Nintendo 3DS: "Hammer Bros. won't move from side to side, so you can move around them and out of range."
  • Wii U: "The Hammer Bro won't move from side to side, so you'll be safe as long as you stay out of range."
