Bowser Jr., sometimes named Junior, is the son of Bowser and an antagonist from the Mario franchise. Since his debut in Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser Jr. has often assisted Bowser with kidnapping Princess Peach and trying to stop Mario and Luigi from rescuing her. Bowser Jr. has since become playable in several Mario spinoff games and related crossover series, such as the Mario & Sonic series and the Super Smash Bros. series. Bowser Jr. made his first Sega-related appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, albeit only as a cameo in the form of a trophy and two stickers. His first playable, let alone physical, appearance in Sega-produced media is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for both the Wii and Nintendo DS.

History[edit]

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

Bowser Jr. makes several cameo appearances throughout Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Bowser Jr.'s trophy depicts him with his most recent appearance at the time, while his two Stickers depict his Super Mario Sunshine artwork and Mario Superstar Baseball artwork respectively. The former sticker enhances attack by +25, with the tail being its area of effect, and it is only usable by Yoshi, Pikachu, Diddy Kong, and Pokémon Trainer. The latter sticker increases the trophy drops by +25, and is usable by used by any fighter. Bowser Jr. is also mentioned in Bowser's trophy.

Bowser Jr. is a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. According to Masahiro Sakurai, the game's producer, he was nearly cut from the game, but ended up being included due to the team's hard work.[1] In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Bowser Jr. is unlocked by completing Classic on Intensity 6.0 or higher as Bowser or by playing 100 Smash matches, then defeating him on 3D Land. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Bowser Jr. is one of the default playable characters.

Bowser Jr. fights in his Junior Clown Car, using a variety of built-in weapons to attack. He also has a unique property, where if opponents hit his body, he takes 1.15× more damage than normal, while hitting the Junior Clown Car reduces the damage taken to 0.88×. Bowser Jr.'s weight is also above average, but because of his unique damage properties, Bowser Jr. can potentially be KO'd sooner than the lighter fighters if his body is hit with a highly damaging attack. Bowser Jr. has another unique trait, where all of his attacks possess disjointed hitboxes, unlike any other fighter. Bowser Jr. also runs slower than most other characters, but has decent mobility while in the air.

Bowser Jr.'s standard special move is Clown Cannon, which fires a cannonball from a cannon in the mouth of the clown car. His side special move is Clown Kart Dash, which turns the Junior Clown Car into a kart that speeds forward. His down special move is Mechakoopa, which deploys a Mechakoopa that walks across the stage and can be picked up like an item. His up special move is Abandon Ship, which ejects Bowser Jr. from the Junior Clown Car, which soon after explodes. His Final Smash is Shadow Mario Paint, in which Bowser Jr. turns into Shadow Mario and paints a giant "X" across the screen that damages opponents. Bowser Jr.'s stage entrance involves him appearing from the background in his Junior Clown Car and then giving a mocking gesture.

Bowser Jr.'s seven "palette swaps" are actually the seven Koopalings with their own voices and different faces for their variants of the Junior Clown Car. Bowser Jr. is the only one of two characters to not have a single palette swap that is a recolor of their standard appearance, with the other being Villager.

Both games feature two trophies of Bowser Jr.. The first one is unlocked by clearing Classic mode as Bowser Jr., and his other trophy is unlocked differently between the games; in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Bowser Jr.'s second trophy is unlocked by clearing All-Star as him, but in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, it is unlocked by purchasing at the Trophy Shop for 1000G, where it becomes available after clearing Classic with Bowser Jr.. Bowser Jr. is the only fighter in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U whose alternate trophy does not utilize any of his alternate palettes, as the Koopalings fill in for those instead.

Bowser Jr. is the only fighter who can utilize the Drill equipment, used for increasing attack power. He can also use the Shell and Dash Mushroom equipment to boost his defense and speed respectively.

Some of Bowser Jr.'s voice clips are reused from Mario Kart Wii.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Bowser Jr. in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Bowser Jr. appears as an unlockable playable character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Koopalings reappear as Bowser Jr.'s seven color changes and now use their magic wands from Super Mario Bros. 3 instead of a hammer. Shadow Mario Paint returns as Bowser Jr.'s Final Smash, but is active for a shorter amount of time. Bowser Jr.'s standard attack now ends with an uppercut, while several of his attacks have decreased range; his down throw is also much stronger. Bowser Jr.'s down tilt now allows him to consume food. His forward smash is called Smash Twin Drills. Although his up tilt has a sourspot that deals less damage, Bowser Jr.'s down tilt, dash attack, and standard aerial all deal more damage.

Bowser Jr. benefits from universal changes, such as: increased mobility, the reduced short hop timing, lessened landing lag in his aerial attacks, the reintroduction of directional air dodges, and the abilities to use any ground attack out of a run, as well as using aerial attacks on ladders. The Junior Clown Car's hurtbox now takes priority over his own hurtbox, making it harder for opponents to deal additional damage to him. Bowser Jr.'s special attacks also receive a mixture of buffs and nerfs to rebalance them.

Bowser Jr., alongside King K. Rool and Villager, cameo in Ken's and Incineroar's debut trailer, "Clash of Flames," nearing the end, where they await to challenge Incineroar for the bout after it beat Ken, much to its chagrin. Bowser Jr. also makes a small appearance within Sephiroth's reveal trailer, The One-Winged Angel!.

Classic Mode route[edit]

Bowser Jr.'s Classic Mode route has him battle opponents who are parental figures/children of other characters or fight alongside other loved ones or close partners. Jr.'s Classic Mode route's name alludes to him calling Peach "Mama" in Super Mario Sunshine and several other games, as well as the long-running joke and mystery of his maternal parentage.

After he is defeated, Bowser Jr. runs away, thus allowing the heroes to proceed. Later, after the defeat of Eggman and Bowser, Bowser Jr. and Metal Sonic will leave challenges for Sonic and Mario in various places. Once all the challenges have been completed, Bowser Jr. and Metal Sonic will admit defeat and pretend to be remorseful. They then decide to join Mario and Sonic to improve their skills. After Bowser and Eggman lose for a second time they tell their masters how they followed Mario and Sonic in secret. This allows Bowser and Eggman to join them to better their skills as well.

In the Bonus Episodes, Bowser Jr. arrives at Stonehenge, mistaking it for London, and after being encouraged by some Shy Guys he defeats Yoshi in a challenge. Another pair of Shy Guys arrive and explain that some of Dr. Eggman's robots are causing trouble in London, so Bowser Jr. heads there on his Bullet Bill to see if he can defeat them. Bowser Jr. accidentally stops the robots when he falls off his Bullet Bill, saving Omochao and a Chao, and is challenged by Shadow and Silver to an event. After he defeats them, they pretend to be angry with him before congratulating him, and Bowser Jr. asks them all to tell Bowser how well he did. A Goomba encourages Bowser Jr. to defeat another robot, and the pair find Dr. Eggman with Metal Sonic in the Main Stadium. Bowser Jr. challenges Metal Sonic, with Dr. Eggman offering the losing consequence as becoming his servant, but Bowser Jr. wins and asks Dr. Eggman to tell Bowser how well he did and also for a snack. Bowser Jr. also appears after Bowser defeats a Goomba disguised as Mario in Tennis (Singles), and congratulates him on his victory, helping to cheer Bowser up.

Bowser Jr. reappears in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 as a playable All-Around character. Bowser Jr. is one of the characters who does not wear different clothing depending on the event.

Story Mode[edit]

In Story Mode, Bowser Jr. would take the Tokyo '64 gaming system, which Sonic, Mario, Toad, Dr. Eggman and Bowser were trapped inside of, from Luigi, insisting only he got to have fun with it. Despite being told of what was going on though, Bowser Jr. stayed skeptical and ran off with the Tokyo '64 to find out for himself. Eventually finding himself in the company of Rouge, Bowser Jr. was soon confronted by Tails and Luigi's party. Refusing to hand over the Tokyo '64, Bowser Jr. found Rouge siding with, although he got dismayed when Rouge promised to hand over the Tokyo '64 if Daisy beat her in an event. While the others were occupied however, Bowser Jr. escaped to the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, where he was guarded by Wendy. When the heroes later tracked down Bowser Jr., Wendy took the heroes on in an event while Bowser Jr. ran off to find Eggman Nega. After finding Eggman Nega and having him examine the Tokyo '64 however, Tails and Luigi found them, and Luigi challenged Eggman Nega to an event. After being defeated, Eggman Nega was ready to hand the Tokyo '64 over until Bowser Jr. intervened. As Eggman Nega's curiosity about the Tokyo '64 then peaked, Bowser Jr. would run off with Eggman Nega to analyze the device and find a way to get the villains out of the Tokyo '64 and keep the heroes trapped in it forever.

Bowser Jr. getting belittled by Peach, from Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

Escaping to the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Bowser Jr. and Eggman Nega were eventually found by Vector. As Tails and Luigi then arrived, Eggman Nega had Zazz occupy the heroes while he analyzed the Tokyo '64, with Bowser Jr. in particular wanting Zazz to verse the heroes for his entertainment. Afterward, when Eggman Nega mentioned that gold medals played a role in releasing the Tokyo '64's captives, everyone sought to collect gold medals. Seeing this as a challenge, Bowser Jr. left to get as many gold medals as possible. Traveling to the Yumenoshima Park Archery Field, Bowser Jr. met Tails and Luigi's party. He proceeded to steal their medals, being too lazy earn them himself. He then planned to bring them to Eggman Nega and get all the credit for himself, but Vector stopped him. Peach then showed up to belittle Bowser Jr. for the racket he was creating, much to the annoyance of the competitors. Regardless, Bowser Jr. tried to steal Peach's gold medals, but Tails foiled that attempt. Nonetheless, Bowser Jr. reluctantly agreed to let Peach help them. After Daisy later won some gold medals, Bowser Jr. tried to steal them to save his father, not caring about competing at all. However, Peach convinced him to work with the others and return the medals he had stolen. Afterward, Bowser Jr. ran off.

Later, in the Olympic Boxing Centre, Bowser Jr. negotiated Zavok into competing in a Boxing match for him. After Zavok was defeated by Luigi however, Bowser Jr. was persuaded by Tails to head back to Eggma Nega with the medals they had earned. When they got there however, Bowser Jr. learned from Eggman Nega that it was the gold medals inside the Tokyo '64 that were the keys to freeing the captives inside the device. This made Bowser Jr. mad, as he knew Eggman and Bowser always lose to Sonic and Mario. Bowser Jr. soon after began carelessly pressing buttons on the Tokyo '64 when Eggman Nega tried sending power-ups to Eggman and Bowser, resulting in a dislocation of the power-ups. Bowser Jr. then ran off with the Tokyo '64 again, refusing to hand it over until his father and Eggman had escaped. Leaving on the note that the heroes could verse him for the Tokyo '64 at the Olympic stadium, Bowser Jr. was found by the heroes there. He was then defeated in an event by Vector, causing him to throw a tantrum. As he tried to run away though, Eggman Nega would return the Tokyo '64 to Tails and Luigi. Bowser Jr. would then stay with Eggman Nega to watch the Tokyo '64 with Vector while Tails and Luigi went to prepare a special battery to replace the dying one in the Tokyo '64. Soon after, Tails and Luigi returned with the Excitement Battery and put it into the Tokyo '64. Not long after, Sonic, Mario, Toad, Eggman and Bowser escaped from the Tokyo '64. Bowser Jr. was then praised by his father for being brave to rescue him. In the aftermath, Bowser Jr. threw a tantrum when Eggman and Bowser lost to Sonic and Mario, but was comforted by Knuckles.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition[edit]

In Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 - Arcade Edition, Bowser Jr. was added as a playable character on September 17, 2020.[2] Bowser Jr. is of the All-Around type like in the Nintendo Switch version, and his stats are the same as in Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Arcade Edition.

  • There's a scary mouth painted on Bowser Jr.'s bib... scarf...shirt...thingie. Whatever that is. Apparently he sometimes uses it as a mask! He thinks it makes him look scary, but it actually just makes him look even more adorable!
  • Bowser Jr. is smaller than his father — and not especially powerful — but he harries Mario and his pals with fiendish underlings and bizarre contraptions. I'm looking forward to seeing what monkeyshines he'll get up to here at the Olympic Games!
  • Bowser Jr. is a bit of a brat, but he respects his father. And Bowser definitely has that no-nonsense air that a good parent needs!
  • Dressing up like Bowser Jr. has had the accidental side-effect of causing the girls of Rio to squeal with delight whenever I wander by. I heard the real Bowser Jr. got upset and said he was going to go tell his dad. Now I’m worried HE’S going to start fawning over me as well!
