Bob-ombs are living mechanical bombs, usually black or bluish-black in color, with a pair of eyes, feet, and a wind-up key on the back. Bob-ombs made their first overall appearance in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, and they were among the several enemies inducted into the Mario franchise when the game was released overseas as Super Mario Bros. 2. Since then, Bob-ombs have been one of several recurring Mario enemies. They have made a few appearances in the Sega-produced Mario & Sonic series, and are an item in every Super Smash Bros. series game.

History[edit]

Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]

In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, Bob-ombs appear as one of the enemies to be sorted in Conveyor Belt. They also appear as an enemy in Shoot!, where they will blow up and cost the player a life if hit.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[edit]

In the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, Bob-ombs appear as enemies in Snow Machine Fight, where they slowly walk around and explode a short amount of time after being hit by a snowball and deal damage to any characters caught in the explosion.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)[edit]

Bob-ombs appear in Dream Rafting in the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, where at various points throughout the event they will be dropped or come out of Barrels onto the raft. The characters can Ground Pound to knock the Bob-ombs off the raft, though will be knocked down or off the raft if they are hit by an explosion. The player can earn points for removing Bob-ombs, and occasionally, bonus points can be earned for removing all of the Bob-ombs from the raft.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

A Bob-omb in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Bob-ombs are featured as an item in every Super Smash Bros. series title, with Super Smash Bros. Brawl being their first appearance alongside a Sega character, Sonic in particular. Bob-ombs can be picked up and thrown at other characters to create an explosion, thus inflicting great damage or also knocking them out instantly. However, if they stay on the ground long enough, Bob-ombs stand up and walk around the stage by themselves and eventually stop and remain in their current spot to explode afterward. If a Sudden Death takes too long to finish, Bob-ombs appear and fall on the stage. Occasionally, Party Balls drop multiple Bob-ombs onto the battlefield when they are opened.

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, there is a Bob-omb trophy. Like several other trophies, it is obtained via a random drop.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Bob-omb appears as an Advanced-class support spirit that occupies one support slot. The spirit depicts Bob-omb's New Super Mario Bros. U artwork. When used on a fighter, it equips them with a Bob-omb item at the start of a battle. The spirit's puppet fighters are three black Kirbys with increased movement speed, fought on the Mushroom Kingdom stage. Aside from the Spirit Board, the Bob-omb spirit can also be obtained from Sheldon's Place for 1,000 Spirit Points.

A mobile bomb with a fuse on its head. It can be picked up and thrown as a powerful explosive, but if no one grabs it, it will tire of waiting and start wandering, then detonate whenever it likes. Its power and unpredictability make it an accident waiting to happen. In sudden-death matches if they go on too long, Bob-ombs rain from the sky to move things along.

Flag of Europe.png A bomb for a body, burning fuse on top, two little legs and a wind-up key spinning away on the back... We probably don't need to tell you what's going on here. Now, that doesn't happen too often! Then again, who knows? Maybe some people will look at a Bob-omb and think it's an eight ball having an identity crisis.
